Portsmouth Safe Streets Initiative (PSSI)

At Big Homies, we believe every young person deserves the chance to grow up safe, supported, and full of potential. The Portsmouth Safe Streets Initiative (PSSI) is designed to help teens in our city by combating and preventing youth gun violence through mentorship, opportunity, and care.

Through PSSI, youth will gain access to mentoring, job training, mediation, group therapy, sports training, counseling, tutoring, and CPR training. For those struggling with deeper challenges, we also provide referrals for mental health and substance abuse services.

This program is effective because it goes where help is needed most:

  • Recruiting residents in neighborhoods most impacted by violence to reach at-risk youth.

  • Engaging individuals who have been exposed to gun violence and want to make a difference.

  • Mediating conflicts before they escalate.

  • Supporting youth injured by violence or at risk of retaliation.

  • Partnering with families, schools, and the community to reduce dropout rates and build brighter futures.

For Parents: Know your teen has a safe place to grow, heal, and learn.
For Youth: Discover mentors, training, and support to rewrite your story.
For Donors: Your investment directly saves lives, strengthens families, and builds safer communities in Portsmouth.

Together, we can make Portsmouth’s streets safer and give our youth the future they deserve.

Sports & CPR Training

At Big Homies, we know the power of sports to build discipline, teamwork, and confidence in young people. Our Sports & CPR Training Program offers specialized training in basketball, football, and baseball, along with seasonal camps and combines that help youth sharpen their skills and showcase their talent.

We go beyond the game by:

  • Pairing participants with experienced coaches who also serve as mentors.

  • Helping youth connect with local teams, with financial assistance available for families in need.

  • Offering CPR classes and certification led by certified instructors, equipping youth with life-saving skills they can carry into their futures.

For Parents: Your child will be supported in a safe, structured environment that builds both athletic and life skills.
For Youth: Train hard, learn from mentors, and discover opportunities to succeed on and off the field.
For Donors: Your support provides scholarships, equipment, and resources that keep our kids active, safe, and prepared for the future.

At Big Homies, we’re not just building athletes — we’re building leaders.

Intensive In-Home Services & Substance Abuse

At Big Homies, we understand that substance abuse doesn’t just affect individuals — it impacts families and entire communities. That’s why our program is designed to provide safe, confidential support for youth while connecting them with the resources they need to make healthier choices.

Through this program, participants have access to:

  • Referrals to trusted professional partners who specialize in recovery and prevention.

  • One-on-one counseling sessions with licensed counselors for personalized support.

  • Information and connections to rehabilitation centers, when additional help is needed.

  • Open group discussions about the effects of substance abuse and preventive strategies, all in a safe and confidential environment.

  •

Why It Matters

Substance abuse among youth can lead to broken families, school dropouts, and cycles of violence. By intervening early, we not only help young people recognize the risks but also provide them with tools, resources, and a supportive community to choose a better path.

Employment & Tutoring

Big Homies equips youth with the tools they need to succeed in school and the workplace. Our programs include job training, career and education fairs, resume and interview workshops, and direct access to employment opportunities. We also pair youth with local business owners for hands-on mentoring and on-the-job training, while providing tutoring services led by certified instructors. Together, we prepare young people for brighter futures.

Event Based Programs

At Big Homies, we believe learning and growth happen best in a fun, supportive environment. That’s why our facility hosts exciting programs like game nights, paint and vision board parties, spa days for girls, day camps, and virtual mentoring for students. We also bring the community together through back-to-school giveaways, sports events, trunk-or-treats, and toy drives. These events not only give youth safe spaces to thrive, but also create lasting memories and connections.

Mentoring

At Big Homies, we believe every young person needs someone in their corner — a mentor who listens, encourages, and guides them toward success. Our Mentoring Services connect youth with caring mentors who walk alongside them through life’s challenges and victories.

Participants benefit from:

  • One-on-one mentoring relationships built on trust and consistency.

  • Field trips and enrichment activities that inspire growth beyond the classroom.

  • Partnerships with local youth services to connect kids with positive role models.

  • Home visits and trust-building exercises to strengthen relationships with families.

  • Access to schools so mentors can support youth directly in their academic environment.

  •

Why It Matters

Mentorship has the power to change the trajectory of a young person’s life. When youth have a trusted adult who believes in them, they are more likely to stay in school, avoid risky behaviors, and develop the confidence to pursue their goals.

For Parents: Know your child is guided by mentors who are invested in their growth.
For Youth: Build relationships with role models who will support and encourage you.
For Donors: Your investment creates opportunities for lasting mentorship that can break cycles of poverty, violence, and hopelessness in Portsmouth.

At Big Homies, mentorship isn’t just a program — it’s a lifeline.
